Bracken Cave is the summer home of more than 15 million Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis), making it the world's largest bat colony and one of the largest concentration of mammals on earth. The emergence of these millions of bats, as they spiral out of the cave at dusk for their nightly insect hunt, is an unforgettable sight. Located less than 20 miles from downtown San Antonio, the cave has come under increasing threat of urbanization. If not for the generous donations of BCI's members and friends, the cave and its remarkable bats likely would have been engulfed by subdivisions. Bat Conservation International (BCI) first purchased the land on which the cave is located in 1992. Since then BCI and our conservation partners have continued to purchase land around the cave to conserve not only the bats, but also the many other native and endangered species found on the Bracken Cave Preserve. BCI stewards the entire property, protecting endangered birds and rehabilitating the land by removing invasive vegetation and reviving native plants. Join Latino Outdoors as we head to Bracken Cave Preserve for an unbelievable Bat experience. BRACKEN CAVE PRESERVE TOUR INFORMATION WHEN / WHERE TO MEET: Plan to meet at the designated time at the main gate – look for the “BCI Event” sign and/or the orange traffic cone. Your guide will check you in at the gate. Once guests are checked in the entire group will caravan to the cave parking area. WHAT TO EXPECT: During your short walk to the cave (approximately 1⁄4 mile), your guide will give an educational talk about BCI, Bracken Cave Preserve, and bats. WHAT TO WEAR: Closed-toed, comfortable shoes - be aware that temperatures during the summer can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING: Camera (no flash, please), binoculars, insect repellent, sunscreen, and bottled water. WHAT NOT TO BRING: Pets, coolers, alcohol. TOUR CANCELLATIONS DUE TO WEATHER: If rain or other weather is an issue, your Bracken guide will assess the situation and decide by 3:00 PM the day of if the tour will take place. • Gates open at 5:30 PM • Be prepared to stay until dusk (approximately 8:30 PM) • This outdoor experience is not recommended for children under the age of 6. • All visitors must complete a liability waiver before entering the property. Each adult must fill out a separate form. Children under 18 should be listed at the bottom of the parent’s form. • If you think you might have accessibility needs, please let your guide know when you arrive at the gate. • There is bench seating in the viewing area. • Food is not allowed in the viewing area. Please arrive by the designated time (6:00 PM). We will not be able to accommodate late arrivals and gates will be locked.
